The safest options are Prague's dedicated kosher shops. Regular supermarkets may stock individual products that appear on the current Prague Rabbinate kosher lists, but the supermarket itself is not kosher-certified.

When shopping at Albert, Billa, Tesco, Lidl or another ordinary supermarket, buy only products bearing a recognized hechsher or products appearing precisely on the current official list. Match the exact brand, product and manufacturer. Do not assume that all products in a category are kosher.

Prague Shabbat meals normally require advance registration and prepayment. Do not arrive without a confirmed reservation.

The Pinkas, Maisel, Klausen and Spanish synagogues primarily operate as Jewish Museum sites and should not be assumed to hold weekly Shabbat services. See our guide to the synagogues of Prague for what each building is.

Is There an Eruv in Prague?

We have not found an officially published or currently verifiable Prague eruv. Shabbat-observant visitors should plan as though there is no eruv. Do not carry in public areas — including phones, room keys, bags, prayer books or items for children — without first receiving current halachic guidance from their rabbi or the Prague Rabbinate.

Where to Stay for Shabbat

Stay in or close to Josefov if you want to walk to Chabad, the Old-New Synagogue, kosher restaurants and communal meals. Confirm manual keys, stair access, entrance sensors, room lighting and late checkout directly with the hotel.

Never treat a hotel as “Shabbat-friendly” based only on walking distance.

A Simple Shabbat Plan for Prague

  1. Thursday

    • Confirm synagogue registration.
    • Reserve and prepay Shabbat meals.
    • Buy kosher groceries.
    • Confirm hotel keys, doors and stair access.
    • Confirm the absence or current status of an eruv.

  2. Friday morning

    • Recheck candle-lighting time.
    • Collect food and required items.
    • Complete shopping before early closing.
    • Put non-Shabbat items away.
    • Save or print walking directions.

  3. Friday afternoon

    • Return to the hotel with generous time.
    • Prepare clothing, keys and prayer items.
    • Walk to synagogue before services.
    • Light candles before the displayed deadline.

  4. Shabbat day

    • Walk only on the preplanned route.
    • Attend confirmed services.
    • Use only prepaid meal arrangements.
    • Do not rely on public transportation.
    • Observe the published Havdalah time before resuming weekday activity.

How many kosher restaurants are there in Prague?

Prague has several kosher dining options under different supervisory authorities, including Chabad-operated restaurants, Shalom Restaurant, 5th District by King Solomon and Hotel King David. Because certifications and businesses can change, consult each listing's current verification date and reconfirm directly.

Is there an eruv in Prague?

We have not found a publicly verifiable operational Prague eruv. Plan as though there is no eruv and contact the Prague Rabbinate for current guidance.

Where can I buy kosher groceries?

Chabad operates a kosher shop at U Milosrdných 6, and the Jewish Community operates the Shalom kosher store at Maiselova 18. The Prague Rabbinate also publishes annual lists of approved local and imported products.

Do I need to reserve Shabbat meals?

Yes. Communal meals usually require advance registration and prepayment. Thursday is the deadline for Shalom, while Chabad and 5th District publish a Friday 14:00 cutoff. Earlier booking is strongly recommended.

Can tourists attend synagogue services?

Yes, but advance contact or registration may be required for security. Ec Chajim asks first-time visitors to register at least three days ahead. Contact Orthodox congregations and the Prague Jewish Community before arrival as well.

Does the Old-New Synagogue hold services?

It remains an active synagogue, but service schedules change. Use the Jewish Community of Prague's current monthly schedule rather than museum opening hours.

Are all Jewish restaurants in Prague kosher?

No. “Jewish cuisine,” Israeli, vegetarian or vegan does not mean kosher. Look for a current kosher certificate from an identified supervising authority.

What neighborhood is best for a Shabbat stay?

Josefov is the most convenient area for walking to Chabad, community synagogues, kosher food and historic Jewish sites. Hotel King David offers the most complete dedicated kosher hotel infrastructure but is in Nové Město rather than Josefov.

Are kosher restaurants open on Saturday?

Ordinary service is generally closed during Shabbat. Certain restaurants and hotels provide prepaid Friday-night dinners and Saturday lunches. Reservations must be completed before Shabbat.
